Introducing the Western Cape Adoption Team: Part 3 – Marietjie Bezuidenhout

How long have you been involved in adoptions?
more than 15 years
What is your role in the Adoption Team?
Counselling women facing crisis pregnancies and facilitating the legal procedures involved in the adoption process
What made you decide to do social work?
My belief that any person has the potential to develop to their full potential with the necessary support and guidance. I also firmly believe that destructive behaviour is mostly the product of circumstances and not because it is a person without potential and character
What is the most challenging aspect of your work?
To face the trauma, sadness and lack of hope in women’s lives and to be instrumental in guiding and supporting them through a process of healing and finding peace
And the most rewarding aspect?
The most rewarding aspect is the fact that I have the privilege to be part of the birth mothers’ lives and  the road they walk; they are the most unselfish, honest, caring and wonderful women.  I am blessed to have the opportunity to be trusted with their deepest emotions and to have the opportunity to support and guide them through a deep emotional process they need to face because they care and put the interests of their children first.
Who is your role model and why?
My role models are people exposed to the most deprived circumstances:- their example showed me the real meaning and purpose of life.  Despite living in the most deprived circumstances they are always smiling, caring for each other, loving and accepting unconditionally.
